Brief Chronology

born 3 November, in Louisville, KY, first child of a Jewish father, 
Marcum Jay Schneider—and a Baptist mother, Georgia Ethridge.

1952—1957

acquired three sisters: Jenny (now) O’Neill, Georgia (now) Ringle, Mary (now) Kiger.

1958—1969

public school education in Pittsburgh, PA.

1969—1971

Reed College, Portland, OR; first contact with Zen Buddhism.

1972—1988

resident in the properties of the San Francisco Zen Center, including:

  • The City Center, in San Francisco; Green Gulch Farm, in Marin County; Tassajara, Zen Mountain Center, in Los Padres National Forest;

  • Worked a variety of jobs within Zen Center, as almost everyone did. Mine included Librarian, Wind Bell Editor, grocery-store merchant, wholesale produce buyer, bakery worker (finishing department.) Also trained and worked as a Hellerwork practitioner.
