Individual prints for the five Buddhas of the Vajradhatu.
VAM
Vairochana Tathagata,
The Radiant One
Vairochana rules the buddha family, the center and basis of the mandala. The neurotic manifestation of buddha-family energy is dullness, almost stupidity. The radiation has gone so far that everything relaxes out and flops. Nothing happens. The wisdom aspect is called All-Encompassing Space: alive, full of potential, completely accommodating.
HUM
Akshobhya Tathagata, The Unshakeable One
Akshobhya rules the vajra family, in the East; vajra energy is connected with water: choppy, dirty water symbolizes anger and defensiveness, while clear still water produces Mirror-Like Wisdom, a state in which phenomena are seen clearly and precisely.
TRAH
Ratnasambhava Tathagata, The Jewel-Born One
Ratnasambhava is lord of the ratna (jewel) family. Everything about this family is yellow-golden, expressing, as Trungpa Rinpoche says, “warmth, full sunshine and the lushness of the southern earth.” From an egoistic point of view, this can veer into a hungry, rotten pride; freed from selfish concerns, it can shine as the golden, calm, Wisdom of Equanimity.
HRIH
Amitabha Tathagata, Infinite Light
Amitabha sits in the west as lord of the padma, or lotus family. The energy here can run red-hot, toward uncontrolled seduction and passion—or, in its enlightened aspect, distinguish the detailed allure of the sense realm for what it is, and establish connections based on compassion.
AH
Amoghasiddhi Tathagata, Unfailing Success
Amoghasiddhi is lord of the northern karma (action) family. The wisdom here is “All-Accomplishing Action” and its energy is similar to swift wind. Narrowed down in an ego-centered way, this leads to jealousy, speed, even paranoia. Opened up beyond small-mindedness, this same energy can pervade every aspect of a situation, and accomplish whatever needs to be done.
